This Month I Have Mostly Been Reading-September

This month was a strange one reading wise, I just didn't enjoy reading for most of the month
Books that I was so excited for where let downs and I got into a bit of a slump
I found it hard to get into books and therefor didn't enjoy reading but there was thankfully a few gems that I really enjoyed. Maybe I am putting too much pressure on myself to read so much so October I am just going with the flow and see how many books I fancy reading!

On The Other Side~Carrie Hope Fletcher
I really want to love this one, and while I love Carrie I just couldn't get into or love this book
The plot itself is magical and sweet but it reads one dimensional and quite childish. It tells the story of Evie Snow who has died and to get to the other side she must go back and relive her secrets.
While I enjoyed the whole premise of the plot, the characters are quite flat and I hated the childish names of the characters Evie Snow, Vincent Winters, Colin Autumn, Grayson Pear and Sonny Shine!! I mean really?! That is like something I would of written in primary school! Both lead characters come across as very immature for 27, Evie espically is very childish and comes across physically as a mirror image of the author large eyes, curly blonde hair, with a green coat who likes to drink tea and eat sweets!
Something that really bothered me when reading this, was there was no time period setting. Evie's family situation was like something from 1900's, Evie's work setting felt like it was the 1950's but then people had mobile phones, and wore the latest trends from today! I think the story would of had much more dept if the author picked a time period and stuck to it, because to be honest the plot didn't make much sense out of context of a time line.
There was a few nice moments but over all this read like bad fan fiction and I think I will stick to listening to Carrie sing and watch her vlogs rather than read her books!

The Second Love Of My Life~Victoria Walters
I am not sure what is going on with me but I have been reading alot of books that are leaving me disappointed lately! This was another that left me feeling meh! While every else is raving on about it, I just thought it was okay! The cover is stunning and really stood out to me it was the main reason I picked it up. Rose is a widow at the tender age of 24, after losing Lucas her childhood sweetheart her whole life has changed. All the plans they had together are gone and she is getting to grips with being alone and starting again. Rose is a painter and in the four years since Lucas has died she hasn't took up a brush and is selling off the last of her paintings. Robert comes to the small town of Talting to buy the paintings but ends up finding much more!
This is typical chick lit but I found the characters slightly annoying! I didn't feel any sadness or pity for Rose she came across as selfish and a bit of a crap friend. Robert seemed moody and a bit weird!
Some of the minor characters where funnier and I would of liked to know more about them. Talting itself sounds stunning and more like an extra character than a setting.
It's an okay read but I wouldn't read it again in a hurry!

The Lilac Girls~Martha Hall Kelly
This my first five star read in a while. Once every few years or so I read a book that I know will stay with my for life this was definitely one of these books.
This book is inspired by real events which makes it all the more heart breaking. This book tells the stories of three very different strong women and how there lives intertwine. Caroline in New York seems a world away from the war in Europe, but she is a kind hearted strong woman with a keen interest in humanity. Her care packages make the New York elite feel like they are helping the orphans of Europe, but as the war drags on Caroline gets more and more involved. She falls for a French actor and must travel to Nazi occupied France
Herta is a German with a great admiration for her Fuhrer she believes everything that he stands for and agrees with all the Nazi propaganda. She is eager to become a doctor and surgeon after passing her medical exams with great results. She applies for one of the only jobs she has seen looking for a female doctor at Ravensbruck. When she gets there it is nothing like she imagined and she is horrified, yet she stays and becomes one of the most horrific things at Ravensbruck The Rabbit Surgeon.
Kasia is a young women from Lublin Poland after her town is bombed and took over by Nazis she gets involved in Underground/Resistance activities. She is caught and along with her Mother, sisters and friends is sent to Ravensbruck to be taught in the ways of The Fuhrer. She suffers such hardship at the hands of some of the most evil female Nazis and then became one of the infamous Rabbits who was experimented on at the hands of Herta.
This book is beautifully written I liked how each chapter is written in the different women's perspective so after a very harrowing chapter we might get some light relief when moved on to a different point of view. Most of the story is set around the time of the first view years of the war when Hitler was invading countries and Germany was winning the war. The setting of Ravensbruck the only women camp of WW11 is a haunting and forgotten place. I had never heard of it before reading this book. This isn't an easy read the horrors of the camp, the evil that one human can enjoy watching another suffer is what makes WW11 a evil dark time in history.
I also applaud the author for writing a character from the other point of view, the character of Herta wasn't easy to read and being honest sometimes I had to put the book down after reading her chapters. I read her chapters wondering how she could be so hard and cruel she really did see these women as numbers with no feelings. I got annoyed at how she could be so blind to the Nazi propaganda. Yet I know this was how most Nazi felt the never questioning of there leader, his believes and values.
I liked how the book didn't end at the end of the war as these women's stories were not over yet. In Poland after Nazi rule the Poles still felt imprisoned as Stalin's communist rule took over and banned most things. There lives would never be as care free as before the war.
The Nazi's are forced to take responsibility for there horrific actions in the war as stories about concentration camps and gas chambers come to light.
In New York life has moved on but Caroline has heard about these so called "Rabbits" and she will not stop until she gets these women the help and justice they deserve.
It's hard to believe that these crimes happened and The Rabbits were real. I think that this is a book that should be read in history classes. I learned so much from this book not just the crimes of war, but how much people will help each other in times of need.

Storms~Carol Ann Harris
After The Lilac Girls I wanted a lighter read and went for this bio of Lindsey Buckingham's ex girlfriend Carol Ann.  Now Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nick's are my favourite artists of all time so I will read ANYTHING about them! Carol Ann states this is her story but to be honest it isn't the reader doesn't get to know her very much. I know she was only 22 when she met Lindsey the amazing singer and guitarist in Fleetwood Mac, but by that time she had already had an abusive failed marriage behind her, put her daughter up for adoption and traveled all around Europe so to say she might be a bit of a character is an understatement but she doesn't tell us much of that. In fact there is only about one page about her daughter and two of her marriage and we never find out how, why or when she has been to all these wonderful countries before Fleetwood Mac!
She focuses on the first few years with Lindsey from 1976-1979 and to be honest I think by the time it got to 1982 and recording Fleetwood Mac's Mirage she and Lindsey where pretty much over. She didn't go to the recording of that album or on the tour.
She paints her time with the band as drug/drink crazy time which all Mac fans know is the truth but Carol Ann forgets that she had a well known drug problem herself! The little things she remembers she really couldn't because she was wasted for most of the time too!
I do think she adored Lindsey and for a part I think he loved her too, but she was much more into him than he was to her. She admitted for another book that he was still in love with Stevie for most of the time they where together. Yet in this book she says that he didn't care about breaking up with Stevie well sorry Carol but 'Go Your Own Way' 'Never Going Back Again' 'Not That Funny' 'The Ledge' and 'Can't Go Back' state other wise!
She does tread dangerous waters when she stated that Lindsey was physically abusive to her! While she states it is her story there aren't very many pictures of her in the book and the cover is a Fleetwood Mac picture! Why not a picture of herself and Lindsey on the cover?! Also all the titles of the chapters are either lyrics from Stevie Nick songs or Fleetwood Mac songs and the actual title of the book is a Stevie Nick's song from Tusk!
She paints Lindsey as hard to live with, a loner with abusive tendencies, Mick Fleetwood as womaniser, money loving, coke fiend (maybe she got him right) John McVie was her only true friend who thanked her for changing Lindsey's image (really I think John of all people wouldn't give a toss about what Lindsey wore) Christine is a hard drinking tom boy who blamed Carol Ann for sleeping with her man and Stevie Nicks is a  jealous, air head, hippy dippy, who hates the ground Carol walks on! While Carol herself is the sweet girl next door, who doesn't drink or do drugs. Yet she doesn't tell the reader that some how after eight years in the inner circle of Fleetwood Mac, that she wrecked her car while driving on drugs, ended up on heroin (making a point here that none of the band members ever had a problem with heroin, coke was there drug of choice) and in the end Lindsey evicted her from his LA house due to her drug problem.
There is nothing new in this book none of the pictures are new or even a good quality!
All that being said I enjoyed reading this trashy tell all but read it all with large grain of salt!

Over The Weekend #48/#49 & Change of Seasons Slump

Last weekend for us was the last weekend of Summer
Saturday here in Dublin was a stunning day the temperatures soared and the sun shone
Two of our close friends got married, a beautiful day for a wedding!
My other friend came to do my hair and makeup. I went for a kind of 1950's dress that I have never wore before. I really liked this style and felt very glamorous!
It was a beautiful and very classy wedding, we had a lovely time catching up on friends we
haven't seen in a while. The bride looked breath taking and the groom scrubbed up well too! We seem to be at the age where all our friends and family are getting married, last year we had three weddings, this year two and next year three and each of them have been beautiful and different in there own way.
We danced the night away, took funny pictures and got quite drunk!
My parents babysat Oisìn and it was lovely to have a night to have a few drinks and relax
Luckily for us my parents also had Oisìn the next day so we could lie in and get over our hangovers in peace!
Since then I seem to be in a bit of a change of seasons slump!
I am in a reading, TV & blogging slump...I finally caught up on all my recorded TV last night! I just can't seem to get into any book I pick up so am taking a reading break
I just can't seem to get with it! I have spent the weekend deep cleaning the house and getting rid of junk. I had two black bags for the bin and one for the charity shop!
I done a bit over an overall on our bed room! I just need to get my mind set out of this little slump I am in at the moment!
Need to get myself some new Autumn clothes, candles and perfume so a shopping spree is needed once that happens I am sure I will be feeling better.
Going for a lovely lush bath then going to watch X Factor, Poldark & Victoria
Hope everyone had a nice week
Normal post will be back this week!

On The Box This Week

Warning-TV Spoilers Ahead!

I find this series is getting better and better finally we are introduced to Victoria's cousin Prince Albert. Straight away there is some chemistry between these two Albert is serious and quiet to Victoria's playful flattery. They both found each other fascinating, attractive and annoying in equal measures and they also came across like that on screen. Albert was maybe a bit too whinny and Victoria a bit too bratty! The piano scene was my favourite as there real feelings for each other came out to play! Of course they both hide it from each other but not to others as every one in court knows how they really feel even Lord Melbourne. He seems a little put out by the Prince and Victoria's feelings for him. If it does seem a little sudden don't blame the script writers it was actually like that in the history books. Victoria did fall for the German Prince hook, line and sinker they here engaged three weeks after he arrived at court! I did love she had to propose to him, how he looks kind of stumped over as he looks at her because she is so small, and how he wanted to kiss her before she even finished asking her question. Tom Hughes and Jenna Coleman play these two brilliantly and I am looking forward to see more of this fiery royal partnership.

Just wanted to state again how I love the production and filming of this show. Cornwall really is like another character in this show, the coastline scenes are stunning, as is the title sequence.
Ross was on trial in this episode, Francis is not dead, he misfired and the gun power did not ignite! Poor Francis can't seem to get anything right!! The trial turned out to be a paid witch hunt to send Ross down, with lots of paid 'witnesses' stating how Ross lead the plundering and looting of a ship.
The other news was Demelza is pregnant again she confines in Elizabeth that she hasn't told Ross yet because of the trial. The odds don't look good in Poldark's favour but I don't think I wasn't the only one who cheered when old servant Judd turned his statement around to Ross's favour!
In the end Poldark is found not guilty and is freed! Not sure how the jury found him not guilty maybe they saw through the lies! So now everyone knows that it was George who set up Ross, and I think that will change Ross as he will want his revenge. Francis and Elizabeth seem to found there spark again at the end of the episode but Francis once again wouldn't again make peace with his sister.
The end of the episode saw Ross and Demelza look happy but with Ross telling her that they should wait to start a family unknowing Demelza is already with child....I think there may be trouble ahead!

With the dreadful news that Bake Off is leaving BBC after this season to move to Channel Four next year, I am really going to savour the rest of this season. Unlike many other fans of the show I have seen what the format is like on a channel with ads as The Irish Bake Off (the Irish version of the show) aired on a channel with lots of ad breaks. Due to this there is only two bakes the signature and the technical with no showstopper! The viewer barely gets to know the bakers before there voted off and it ruins the pacing of the show. This added with the fact that Mel and Sue will also be leaving the show makes me think that I will not be tuning into the new version on Channel Four. Don't get me wrong I love alot of shows on Channel Four but for me the format at the BBC works best.
Now back to, tonight's episode it was batter week! Not sure if I am a fan of batter week but it was fun to watch the bakers lose there cool over frying pans!
We where only seconds into the show when Mel and Sue sang a little ditty which made me fall in love them all over again! First bake was Yorkshire puddings which had to filled with all sorts of delights! The curse of Star Baker continues as Tom had a bit of a rubbish week! We had Lace pancakes is that even a thing?!! Lace pancakes for the technical which I don't think was that hard of a technical challenge but then again I'm not the one doing it! Showstopper was Spanish street food churros which been honest didn't look appealing at all mostly over fried greasy dough!
One of my favourites Benjamina won Star Baker and Kate was sent home after her over cooked deep fried churros rabbits where not a hit!
Next week it's filo pastry!!

Oisìn Almost Three Years Old!

My Darling Boy,
I wasn't going to do another update till your third birthday in December,
but I could let this Summer past without documenting it!
This Summer you said goodbye to all things baby, although you will forever be my baby!
You took things in your stride, became even more independent and become more of a little boy then ever!
Over the Summer you moved into a toddler bed from a cot and you love your bed. Lately you have been having bad dreams, and little night terrors. Your little imagination has created monsters and dragons in your bedroom! Daddy has created this magic Monster spray (water) for night time to banish those awful creatures! Normally after a cuddle you go straight back to sleep, but sometimes you try push to sleep with us and being honest sometimes we give in!
Your speech has always been good but now you really are a little parrot and we have heard you repeat some bad words that you have overheard!! Your favourite thing to do at the moment is make up fairy tale stories and tell them to me and Daddy! You also love to sing and dance, you know some Bob Marley songs as well as nursery rhymes. One of my favourite things you do is when a song comes on the radio you will say 'I love that song' even though you have never heard it before!
This Summer you also finally gave up your soother (dummy/pacifier) we tried give up this before but it never worked. Until we weaned it down to bedtimes only, then one day I put it away and you never asked for it since! You haven't been well lately with a chest infection you haven't asked for your soother but have sucked your thumb when feeling poorly.
You also dropped your mid day naps! One day you just wouldn't take one for me and that was that! I do miss you going for naps if I'm honest as that's when I got most of my housework done! Yet now my favourite time of the day is when we have quiet time, we watch around 40 minutes of TV and you snuggle beside me! I should be doing housework but this is so much better!
Over the Summer you have also become very attached to me, of course you still adore Daddy. Yet it has got hard for me to do anything with my little shadow following me. Before you had no problem going on sleep overs to Aunts and Grandparents, now its much harder chore for us all! You refused to stay in your Aunts when you realised I wasn't going with you! I am hoping this is just a stage you are going through due to us having spent most of the Summer together, because as much as I love you, we both need our independence.
One of the biggest things you conquered this Summer was potty training, it took you a while but you are getting there. You still have accidents especially when you are playing and forget to go to the toilet! You only used your potty a handful of times then when Nanny bought you a junior toilet seat you took to that straight away. One thing that makes me smile is that you really like your privacy while using the toilet once we have helped you on the seat you ask to turn away or leave the bathroom and then you call us again when you are finished!
Last week you went back to daycare after a Summer of play camp, this time you are in the pre-school room. Some of your friends are there but most of them have moved on to early start school, because you where born in December you don't start till next year. You also have some new childcare assistants so last week you found it a little strange and we had a few tears when Daddy and I left but I know you will settle in fine and have lots of friends.
This Summer was bittersweet as you left behind babyhood and started the journey of growing up

Over The Weekend #47

This weekend was fairly uneventful to be honest
Oisìn was unwell with a chest infection and on antibiotics so not in the best form
Hubby was working all weekend, so Oisìn and I curled up for the weekend!
Oisìn seems to be on the mend now but hubby and I feel like we are coming down with something!
I topped up on all our daily vitamins and got lots of fresh vegetables and fruit so that we boost out immune systems during the change of the seasons.

Friday Hubby and I shared a early coffee date together
Lately we haven't had much of a chance to be alone so it was lovely to spent
a little time chatting over coffee and cake.

This poorly toddler spent most of the weekend in his pyjamas cuddling me on the sofa
He has an awful chest infection with a very chesty cough which has been making him vomit
at night. He has been happy enough dozing on the sofa with lots of Disney movies and cuddles from Mammy!

There was no wild late nights this weekend for us! I was happy enough to be in bed at 9pm reading this book. Once every few years I read a book that I know will stay with me forever and this is definitely one of those books. While Oisìn was dozing on the sofa this weekend I made peppermint tea and curled up and read. I can't wait to do a full review on this at the end of the month

After a late Sunday Lunch, we watched Wreck It Ralph and Thomas The Tank Engine for the 100th time this weekend!
Later we settled down with a glass of wine or two, to watch Polark and Victoria

On The Box This Week

Warning-TV Spoilers Ahead!

Life has been so hectic lately that I have been watching good TV but not had the time to blog about it! So Poldark is back on our screens Sunday nights, after a slightly longer wait then normal. The BBC decided to put it on the same time as ITV's Victoria so I have to watch one and SKY Plus the other!
For a season opener it was quite lacklustre in my opinion, this episode was all about Ross's up coming trial after been framed for murder. There can't really be much suspense about his fate as this is the first of a ten part series! I think this season will be about how the trial effects him and his family as his cousin Francis is still reeling after his gambling debts left him in ruin last season. He still seems to be on a path of self destruction as the episode ended with him holding a gun to his head.
I am looking forward to seeing how the trial unfolds and if Aidan Turner wants to get his top off a little more that would also be welcomed!

Episode three of this series was also shown on Sunday I chose to SKY Plus this due to the amount of ad breaks! I am really enjoying this but one flaw I find with this is the over dramatic storyline of Victoria and Lord Melbourne. Victoria's actual life is so full of exciting stories that to be there is no need to add this mostly fictional romance. In reality Lord M wasn't half as good looking, fatter and going bald! Some scenes of Victoria pinning for her dear Lord M are quite cringe worthy, but then she is only 18 with no really male role models. I do like how the love seems to be one sided and in this episode young Victoria relaises that been Queen must come before everything and everyone.
I am glad that this storyline is coming to an end as in the closing scenes we saw Prince Albert stroll into Victoria's life.

This week in the tent it was bread week so Paul had his claws out! My favourites are still quirky Val but I do think she is holding on by the skin of her teeth. She should of went home this week instead or young Michael his bakes where bad but nothing as bad as Val raw dough elephant of Candice's collapsed brioche! My other favourites are Selasi, Andrew and Benjamina it will fun to see how they get on next week for the first ever batter week!

Our 5th Wedding Anniversary!

Five years ago I married my best friend the one who has been with me through think and thin, seen me at my best and worst, we have had great times and seen some awful times. You are my rock  who would of thought that young girl who didn't like you on her first day in a new job would become your wife?! Well Patrick did he always said we would get married and once again he was right!!

Over The Weekend #46

On Friday it was our fifth wedding anniversary but this year it was sightly different as it would of also been my brother's 30th birthday. So we didn't do much to celebrate our wedding anniversary but more to celebrate what would of been my brother's 30th.

Friday morning we opened the few small gifts we got each other and laughed as we realised that we got each other the same anniversary cards! We really are morphing into each other!

We then went for breakfast to our favourite place The Honeycomb Cafe
Oisìn really enjoyed his breakfast as you can tell from the picture!
It was nice to take some time out of the day just the three of us!

We went down to my parents to help set up for that evening. My Uncle who is a fab chief made a huge chicken curry for everyone with all the trimmings! Mam had done up the back garden lovely with candles, flowers and balloons. Dad had cleared the kitchen so there was enough room for people to stand with some lovely pictures of Patrick around the room. I had the bubbly on ice and Oisìn ran around playing with his new spiderman balloon while we raised a toast of my brother.

Oisìn and Granddad have a little dance to Patrick's favourite singer Bob Marley
Oisìn once again was a trooper it was a long day for him but he took it in his stride
even the late bedtime. He was dancing with everyone but his new thing to say is NO PICTURES!

We had a lovely time celebrating my brother's birthday and I know he was partying in heaven
Happy 30th Birthday Patrick

Saturday Morning as a treat for being so good we brought Oisìn to the cinema to see Finding Dory
Aw this movie hit me in the feels! We all really enjoyed it but Oisìn loved the short called Piper the most it was so sweet!
Oisìn enjoying Finding Dory. Afterwards we went to
my parents for a bit of lunch and I ended up staying and having a glass of wine with them.

When I got home Paul and I ordered a takeaway and watched this new version of the 1946 movie La Belle Et La Bete. I liked it but the old one will always hold a special place in my heart

By Sunday we where all pretty shattered and Oisìn has come down with a nasty cough/cold
but we finished off the weekend with a family roast with my parents.
We lit Patrick's candle and had a glass of bubbles while catching up on the
Goodnight Sweet Heart special.

Happy 30th Birthday In The Sky

30 years ago you made your way into this world on a bright September's day
You little brother made our lives better in every way
A little brother for me to hug and love
And I know today you are looking down from above
Brother to me a son to Mam and Dad
A wonderful person the best the world could have
You turned the grey skies into warm September gold
I thought we would have forever and watch us all grow old
But you are no longer here to share
The bond we all had but I know your here tonight
As I can feel you in the air
So as we wish you Happy Birthday we look up to the stars that shine so bright
We think of all the good times with tears in our eyes
And think to our self how really time flies
Happy Birthday Patrick
Son, Brother, Nephew, Cousin, Uncle & Friend
That your not here after all these years is still so hard to comprehend
We still miss your beautiful face
We will met again in another time & place
Your are our shinning star we feel you near even though we apart
Although we may cry and feel a little sad
You are forever smiling in our heart
We we always remember you as that kind, sweet lad
