This was the first weekend in a while
that we got to do everything we had planned
Finally a weekend with no illness!

Saturday morning we had a big fry up
haven't had a proper cooked breakfast in a while
so we really enjoyed it
Then it was off the my favourite place the library!!
Oisìn loves going as our local library
has a huge children's library with lots of reading areas which he loves
After I picked up a mountain of books
we went to my parents for tea and cake
and we watched the rugby match

Oisìn and Nanny watching the rugby
Ireland aren't doing well at all during this Six Nations
But Oisìn sure looks cute in his rugby jersey!

Nanny bought Oisìn a little musical guitar
He loves it and look how much of a Furey does he look here!!

Paul was so good on Sunday morning he brought Oisìn swimming
so I went back to bed with a cuppa and my latest book!

Sunday lunchtime we went up to Paul's parents for
Sunday lunch. It was Delicious and I was too busy eating to remember
to take a picture!

Afterwards Oisìn loved playing with JJ the family dog

It was a lovely weekend
spent with family

On This Day.........

.....Eight Year Ago
Paul & I where in Venice

Wish I was there now!!!

This Month I Have Been Mostly Reading - February

This month I have been reading an awful lot!
Books have helped me through hospital appointments,
endless nights of rocking a poorly baby back to sleep,
snatched moments when the toddler isn't demanding my attention,
long waits in doctor's surgery
and long days when I can't get out of bed due to a twisted bowel!

Forever Friends-Kate McCabe
I was looking for a light read something that I could pick up and put down in between
hospital appointments. So my Mam gave me a book she had been reading lately
Forever Friends is set in 1980's Dublin and about three friends Maddy, Rosie and Sophie
although the book is basically Maddy's story. Maddy is a successful sales woman for a local estate agent in Dublin. It's the 80's and in Dublin apartment life is what the young want and Maddy has an eye for knowing what the people want and what is going to be popular. That said it's the 80's and it's Dublin and she is a woman in business so she meets all the problems working women did in the 80's
I found the start of her story really interesting seeing how she over came certain stereotypes. She has a good head for business she buys a run down house at a bargain and turns it into something amazing.
However I found the romantic storyline with Grey a bit one dimensional and very drawn out. By the time I got three quarters of the way through the book I was sick to my teeth of hearing about property prices, and the property market! It is a book I would take on holiday with me and it is easy to read, it's fairly predictable but I could see it beside my sun lounger while I sipped a cocktail!!

The Distant Hours-Kate Morton
After reading The House At Riverton last month I just knew I had
to read some more of Kate Morton. I liked this book even more than Riverton!
It had me hooked after the first pages! So many secrets, so many twists, so many whispers!
This book is alot darker than Riverton, it's a slow builder but it's so worth it! I was snatching time to read it everywhere! I read the last few chapters in bed while the hubby was snoring unable to put it down till I finished it! Morton is such a good writer that her character have layers and layers, secrets after secrets and as the reader we get the joy of discovering these secrets and stripping away the layers.  Stories within stories, set in a huge castle during the blitz with a fictional Gothic novel thrown in!! It's a dark, heavy read but so well worth it!
It all starts with a lost letter from 50 years ago
that has been final delivered to Edith's Mother Meredith
If Edith hadn't happen to be home for a family dinner she would have never known anything about Middlehurst Castle and the Blythe sisters, but something changed in her Mother's face when opening that letter. Something Edith couldn't forget and with her Mother being tight lipped on the subject, Edith decides to do some digging herself. She goes to Middlehurst Castle never realising that the castle itself isn't ready to give up it's secrets ...but if she listens carefully she might hear the whispering in The Distant Hours

Love From Paris-Alexandra Potter
After reading The Distant hours I need a little chic lit in my life
With it being the month of love I decided to give this a go
I really wanted to love this as it promised not your normal kind of chic lit
in its blurb. At best I liked this book, the start was all very predictable and I wasn't very fond
of the style of writing.
The story tells of Ruby who get stood up by her hot American boyfriend on her birthday
Not one to mop around she hops on the Euro Star to met her friend in Paris
She wants a weekend of shopping, eating and drinking but she get much more than
that as she finds letters of a Second World War romance and the secrets it held
I did like how Paris was described here Potter got the beauty of Paris spot on
and it did make me want to go back soon! The latter part of the book was better
and I enjoyed the mystery around WW2 romance. The cover of the book is beautiful and I would recommend this read while on holiday with a glass of wine in hand!

Through Streets Broad And Narrow -Gemma Jackson
This was another book my Mam passed on to me after reading as
she thought it was a light enough read for doctors and hospital appointments.
The cover of this book is beautiful and the main thing that drew me to this book.
The description on the front of this book is misleading it says If you like Strumpet City you will love this. Well I have read Strumpet City and it's nothing like this book, Strumpet is a much more of a heavy read and also much better written.
That said I did enjoy the tale of Ivy Murphy set in the slums of Dublin in 1925
As she fights to find a new life for herself after the sudden death of her Father.
All the character's are very well rounded and likable. The book itself reminded of the style of Catherine Cookson who's books I devoured as a teenager. Instead of the Newcastle slums, it was set in the inner city Dublin slums, instead of Northern slang it was Dublin slang and like Cookson's books there was a strong, independent, feisty heroine at the centre of the story. The writing isn't up to Cookson standard but this is a first in a trilogy of books
about Ivy Murphy and I will be reading the other two soon.

The Miniaturist-Jessie Burton
This book tells the story of Nella Oortman a 18 year old country woman
who has come to Amsterdam as the wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt new wife
Johannes is kind but uninterested in his new beautiful wife he seems to be
always working. His sister rules the house with a strict hand and never
gives Nella any control over the running of what now should be Nella's household
So Nella feels not a true wife but there is another reason why Nella doesn't feel like
a wife her so called husband has never visited her bed.
The house itself frightens Nella but when Johannes give her a dollhouse
it gives Nella something to do and helps her loneliness. If she can't be Mistress of the house
maybe she can be Mistress of this Miniature house
I devoured this novel and to be honest I can't say why! The story drew me in and the secrets the house held had me gripped, but it was the storyline of the secret miniaturist that kept me asking, who, why, how but this storyline wasn't really for filled and questions where not asked in the way I liked.
I did enjoy the book and it's very well written, but I was unhappy with the ending.

What Oisín has been reading this month

Peter's Pebbles - Cherie Zamazing
Oisín has this book a while now
but has been asking to read it alot the last few weeks
It's a cute little story about Peter who paints his pebbles
different things and watches as they magically come to life

What have you been reading this month?

On The Box This Week

Warning-TV Spoilers Ahead!

Great to see this back on Friday nights, even better to see George Gilbey and family back
Great move for the show as I think there is a gap there with less and less of Steph and Dom last session the producers knew something need to be added. George is very funny and cant wait to hear some of the things he has to say this series.

Really who is in charge of the scheduling for this? They should sacked!!
The double length final episode of this show was put on a 6.30pm with little notice
it deserved so much better. Poor Miss Havisham sat in her wedding dress looking at her wedding feast......as we all knew this storyline would end but it was a joy getting there.
There was lots of plots left hanging for maybe a second series of maybe just setting up for how the novels continue.

This was a very powerful episode of my favourite Sunday night show
It reminded me of the early seasons and showed me that even in season 5 this
show can still pack a punch.
There was someone out in the docks of popular attacking women in a very violent way
leaving bite marks on there skin. That was awful enough but when Cynthia got attacked
her habit didn't save her from this animal. It was Cynthia who found the strength and courage that the other women who where attacked couldn't to go to the police. In the end the man was found and arrested. I really enjoyed this episode and it brought Cynthia one of the original characters back to the forefront which I enjoyed.

Episode ten of season six of The Walking Dead was a little different than the action packed
second half season premier. It has been two months since the shocking events of the last episode
and Carl seems okay maybe a little quite but he is walking around with a bandage over his eye.
I am hoping they deal with the fact that Carl lost his eye and that's not something you get over quickly mentally there should be some scars there, and I hope the writers are going to explore that part of Carl in future episodes.
Rick and Daryl go on a run and it seems like they where just enjoying being out on a run
enjoy getting out of Alexandria, killing zombies and listening to rock and roll.
I did enjoy the funny comic moments between these two, everything seems to be going well
until they come across a man who calls himself Jesus. What ensues is a cat and mouse game
after Jesus takes the guys tuck. Daryl wants to leave him behind but Rick brings him back to Alexandria. They tie him up and leave him in an empty room.
Finally tonight Rick and Michonne hooked up!! Something I had being hoping would happen for seasons!! Just as the walking dead can Jesus pops up in Rick's bedroom as the new couple are sleeping and tell Rick he needs to talk!
This was an enjoyable episode and one of my favourite slower episodes

On The Box This Week

Warning-TV Spoilers Ahead!

Like I thought back at the start of January due to scheduling changes I fear this show
will leave with a whimper instead of a bang! More scheduling changes see this show now
moved to Thursday and Friday nights I have completely lost track and am relying on sky plus to record it for me!
The fact that the BBC didn't show more love for this show is a shame as the acting and casting
as been top notch. The drama is really taking up a gear in the last couple of episodes. Frances and Honoria from Dickens Bleak House novel really came into there own this week. Honoria went into early labour with only cold, horrible sister Frances to help her. Frances did deliver baby Esther and for a moment we thought the maybe the ice has melted from Frances heart but it was not to be and when the baby finally cried she chose not to tell her sister and lead her to believe her baby was still born. Thus starting a series of events which will come to ahead in the novel Bleak House.
We also found out who the murderer was this week so really we could stop watching now
but no there is three more episodes left and mostly centred around Miss Havisham my most favourite Dickens character so I will not be missing that!

While I still love this beautiful heart warming show I have to admit
I feel like its missing something this season. I am really missing the characters
of Jenny and Chummy and am missing the true story lines of Jenny Worth's books.
I am also not liking where Trixie's storyline is going, I don't like the Tom and Barbara romance. Yes Trixie and Tom are an odd couple but that's why there good together. In real life Trixie did become a Vicar's wife and sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, which is where this show is going now less of the true life stories of Worth's east end and more fictional stories.
Saying all that I did enjoy this episode even if there was less of the midwives or nuns and maybe a bit too much Fred! It was mostly about Roseanne a new Mother who cant let her past go and thinks she is not good enough to be wife or Mother. This episode reminded me a little of some of the more hard hitting storylines of season one or two. The other major storyline was Doctor Turner's  realisation that cancer can be connected with smoking. As a heavy smoker (he is pictured with a cigarette in almost every scene the past couple of seasons) he is shocked and scared by this,so decides to go cold turkey. I really do like Patrick and Sheila Turner together it is one relationship that as grown over the years, and it may not be as gripping as season two it still one of my favourites in the show. Call the Midwife may not be as true or gripping as past seasons but its till my favourite thing to watch on a Sunday night.

As a person of a certain age I remember the trail of OJ Simpson
maybe not very clearly but I remember my parents watching it alot
the live stream from LA seemed to always be on our TV!
So we decided to give this show a go mainly cause the hubby is a huge Cuba Gooding Jr fan
He is very good as the main role but the first episode itself was quite slow
but there was some good performances David Schwimmer is great as Robert Kardashian
(funny how Robert's daughters are now more famous than him and OJ)
but to me Schwimmer will always be Ross and his hair in this show is very Ross-ish!

I didn't think the mid season finale of my favourite zombie show was up to much
it was a disappointing end to the first half of the season
Wow did it make up for it when it returned to our screens Monday night!
Daryl Dixon was back on form after spending a whole season grieving
he wiped out half of Negan's gang in a second!!
In Alexandria the dead are roaming the streets and Rick's group are walking with them
trying to come up with a plan. Young Sam is not in a good head place and as only the walking dead can a whole family are wiped out in minutes!
Then of course there is that scene the one everyone is talking about
fans of the comic books have been waiting on. I haven't read the comics so was shocked and in awe when it happened. As Carl looks up at Rick with a rather large hole where his eye should be and yet his sheriff hat remains still on his head was a rather awesome scene and up there as one of the top walking dead moments. If I am being honest I think this was one of my all time favourite episodes of The Waking Dead, but after an episodes like this its always hard to keep the pace up, but with a Rick and Daryl centred episode next week I am hoping the pace will not slow down just yet!

Happy Belated Birthday Hubby!

The past few weeks have been full of
hospital appointments and we have all took turns
of being sick!
But last Monday we did have a nice day for
Paul's birthday due to all the other things
I never got around to blogging about it!

Monday morning little Oisín was getting
over a chest and viral infection
(viral infection he picked up another one in creche
by the end of the week!)
So we let Daddy have a lie in while we cuddled on the sofa watching Disney

We then went to collect some yummy Birthday cupcakes
that I got made for Paul.
We went to Paul's parents for tea and cake
which was lovely!

We polished off the day with a lovely bottle of fizz
It was a lovely start to the week
and not a normal Monday
pity we seem to be a household filled with illness
since then!!

Slimming World Meal Plan Monday

Due a change in my medication and a intense next three months
I have been advised by my doctors to stop going to weigh in at Slimming World
until May! My doctors don't want me to have the added pressure of weigh in when
the new medication can cause weight gain and bloating.
Of course I can still stick to plan and eat healthy but I will not be weighing myself
My focus at the moment is to get myself better and build up my immune system
while dealing with my new treatment and medication
I will be still doing my Meal Plan every monday and syning my treats!

Monday: Sticky BBQ Ribs, Corn on Cob with Baked Potatoes

Tuesday: Chicken Wrapped In Parma Ham, Green Beans & Mash Potatoes

Wednesday: Slimming World Meat Balls With Homemade Tomato Sauce & Spaghetti

Thursday: Beef Tacos & Salad

Friday: Homemade Chicken Kievs, Peas, Carrots & Oxo Roasties

Saturday: SW Big Grill Bacon, Mushrooms, Beans, Eggs & SW Chips

Sunday: Roast Chicken Sunday Lunch

Over The Weekend #17

I have been an awful blogger the past few weeks
with hospital and doctor appointments
it has took all my strength to be a Mammy never mind
anything else!
This weekend just when we thought we
where all getting back on our feet
Oisín picked up a viral infection on Friday in day care
so most of the weekend plans where put on hold
and now poor hubby has picked up the bug!

Father and Son watching the Six Nations Rugby
Ireland are not doing too well this year
Lollipops to cheer our little boy up who spent
most of Saturday asleep, coughing or vomiting!

Happy Valentines Day
By Sunday morning Oisín had slept a good 12 hours
so he was more or less back to himself by Valentines morning
Paul and Oisín brought me breakfast in bed
with beautiful roses and lovely presents
but my favourite card of the day was this one......

My first handmade card from Oisín
He made it in daycare last week and it melted my heart
when he handed it to me.
There was a time when I thought I would have none
of this so it makes it all the more special

We didn't do much on Valentines day itself
I had a mid morning bubble bath and finished the book I was reading
Then we thought so fresh air might do us some good we wrapped up
and spent forty minutes or so in our local park
Then it was home and hot chocolate all round

Later hubby and son watched the footie
while I poured myself a glass of cava and snuggled beside them on the sofa
When Oisín went to bed Paul and I had an M&S dine in meal
but by 9pm Paul wasn't feeling too good
and now has the viral infection Oisín had on Saturday

I can well and truly say our household has seen it's fair share
of illness and ailments for the past eight weeks I think
we are ready for Spring!

Sunday, 14 February 2016

Happy Valentines Day

Over The Weekend #16

By Saturday morning I was feeling a little better
after Oisín had a sleep over on Friday night
at his Grandparents so I could rest and sleep in
Saturday morning. It was a lovely treat and
just what I needed to get back on my feet!

After collecting Oisín from his grandparents
we went to my favourite place the library!
I got lots of lovely books to keep me going
in February!

We then went for a quick walk in the park
and to get a few bits from the shop
Oisín was really tired at this stage so we
didn't hang around for long
We had a lovely steak dinner and Oisín
enjoyed dipping his chips in the pepper sauce!

After Oisín was bathed (he had an early night as he wasn't himself)
I had a hot shower got into my pjs and chilled out
We watched the movie Legend with Tom Hardy so much eye candy!

Poor little mister Oisín picked up a little tummy bug
and Sunday was spent looking after our little boy
He was off his food and slept for most of the day
we keep giving him plenty of fluids and he
seems so much better today

After Oisín was tucked up in bed
I could relax with a glass of red and
Call The Midwife
Then it was off to bed for an early night
(Or maybe I read one of my library books till 1am!!)
